I was reflecting this morning on how similar this spring is to last spring.
Re: The title of the post. I am totally addicted to Battlestar Galactica.
hotpantsgalore & I have now watched everything except the two-part finale for Season 3. I can't believe that (ugh, no spoilers) .... they really did ..... what it seems that they did in the episode Maelstrom. I was walking around the apartment in shell-shock.
Then I went to church & got shell-shocked again. During worship services, Rev. Rock delivered an amazing sermon that was ... so many things at once, it's hard to summarize. There was a little bit of church history (Gnosticism), some simple but intense theology (we are saved by grace through faith & nothing else), some political commentary (neither the Right nor the Left has any secret, complete knowledge), & a scathing reminder of the sinfulness of all human beings (we have a history of screwing up the simple message of the Gospel). It was an amazing message against divisiveness & what C.S. Lewis called "Christianity and".
But after worship, I went to a discussion group about global climate change. The speaker (who was decent but not stellar) was broad-sided by an audience member who works for a group he described as, "similar to the Competitive Enterprise Group". He laid into the speaker, saying that "framing the question of global warming in terms of Christianity is heresy". He was a very aggressive speaker, & he totally ambushed the speaker - who was probably expecting a fairly receptive audience.
You know how you hear some people talk, & you quickly realize that no matter what, they won't change their minds & they won't shut up? That was this guy. He just kept going on & on, twisting the words of the sermon we had all just heard, using the most ridiculous arguments (but at very high volumes), loudly talking over the presenter. I wish I had a better memory for facts, so that I could've shot down that guy's horrible, horrible lies & misrepresentations. It's so frustrating to know that, if only I had had an internet-enabled laptop upon which to run some basic queries, his arguments would have been sunk. They were preposterous - but delivered with conviction. After a few minutes, I had to leave. It completely ruined the amazing mood I had been in from Rev. Rock's sermon, & it took me several hours to snap out of it. Happy Earth Day to you too, bastard.
But the rest of the afternoon was a wonderful tonic.
hotpantsgalore's softball team had their first games of the year - a doubleheader at East River Park. I parked myself on a warm concrete bench & basked in the sun, watching the boats on the river & the antics of Spitfire's haplessly inept opponents with equal delight. Spitfire crushed the other team, but since the division they're playing in is not particularly competitive, I don't think there were any hard feelings. Afterwards,
katieledge, K*,
hotpantsgalore, & I had Indian food for dinner at the incomparable Panna II.
And today? It's supposed to be 86 degrees in Gotham. I need to buy some capris.
- I live in the outer/residential portion of a major American city & commute to the central/business portion of the city for work. I commute on a mass transit line, the "N".
- I live across the street from a public school, which - at certain times of the day - is incredibly noisy with screaming kids on recess.
- I spend most of my time hanging out with the two people who live in the same building as me (OK, last spring I hung out with my two housemates AND
hotpantsgalore. Slightly different). - I'm gearing up for a triathlon season with Team in Training. I can't decide whether I'm in better shape this year - I haven't been swimming in months, but I have been running & doing a few stationary bike workouts. I have more confidence, but my knees hurt more. It's sort of a tossup.
- I'm attending the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church. Last year it was the Seventh Avenue Presbyterian Church. It cracks me up that these two institutions are nearly 3,000 miles apart.
- I can't decide if I dislike my job, or if I just dislike having to work. I'm kinda-sorta looking for new employment but being very half-hearted about it.
- Last spring, I was fighting with metformin because I had just started taking it. This spring, I'm fighting with metformin because my dosage was raised from 500 mg/day to 1,500 mg/day. This spring hasn't been as bad (or maybe I'm just used to feeling nauseated).
