Irony.

A billboard in Jefferson Parish, just outside of New Orleans on the Earhart Expressway:
Maybe Indonesia will donate money to NOLA instead.

I can't make it out. What does it say?

[identity profile] angledge.livejournal.com 2005-10-14 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a UNICEF plea for donations for tsunami relief efforts.

[identity profile] liz007.livejournal.com 2005-10-14 07:15 pm (UTC)(link)
"help unicef help the children"

[identity profile] lyzz13.livejournal.com 2005-10-14 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
So is that ironic, or Alanis-Ironic?

Heh.

[identity profile] angledge.livejournal.com 2005-10-14 07:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's real irony.

I'm working on your interview questions, BTW.

Even though I was an English major for a while, I still don't quite get irony. Especially when my favorite example of a diabetic being killed by being hit by a sugar truck turns out not to be ironic.

Also: YAY!

If the diabetic gets struck and killed by an insulin truck, however, that's irony.

Ooooooh, that would be so bitter!

(Good to see you.)

Diabetic being hit & killed by a sugar truck: Yes, that is an example of irony.

Diabetic spends their entire life avoiding sugar in one form because eating too much would be fatal, and yet STILL gets killed by the sugar in a form of vehicular overdose.

Yes, it's ironic, mostly because the joke speaks to the idea of "why bother being healthy, since we're all going to die one way or another anyway" in a particularly bitter sense.

Ah, but I had this conversation with a professor of mine, and she said that irony would be a diabetic getting hit by a truck carrying insulin, as they were killed by something that was supposed to have saved their life. Hence my confusion, and my decision to switch to History major.

But then again, this was the English Prof with a mullet and a muumuu...

Obviously knew nothing about style, linguistic or otherwise!

I'm British and I can't see the irony...

Re: Heh.

[identity profile] angledge.livejournal.com 2005-10-14 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
You just want me to argue with you some more, don't you?

Isn't one of the meanings of irony that there is incongruity between what might be expected and what actually occurs? I thought it was ironic that (mostly absent) New Orleans citizens were being exhorted to donate money to help victims of a flood. C'mon, throw me a bone here....

Re: Heh.

[identity profile] blu-matt.livejournal.com 2005-10-14 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, how stupid of me, I didn't realise it was in New Orleans (because I spent the time trying to read the image rather than the text).

It would have been really ironic, if it was erected after Katrina.

Naw, that'd just be chutzpah. :)

OMG I WANT THAT ICON!!!!

(goes to see if you have a "Dreaded head of Vecna" icon)

No, but you do have Ambush Bug. How much does that rock!

Re: Heh.

[identity profile] lovellama.livejournal.com 2005-10-15 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
:D Thanks! You can take both if you'd like, avec credit. Would you like me to make you a Dreaded Head of Vecna icon? Does it require a specific head?

ps had to look the head one up, v funny!!

Re: Heh.

[identity profile] richcsigs.livejournal.com 2005-10-15 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
"The Dreaded Head of Vecna" maybe one of the all time best D&D stories ever, real or not. I can just so see that happening with my D&D group.

Threw this together:

I know that strip of road well. That's right near the airport. Oh, the irony.

[identity profile] angledge.livejournal.com 2005-10-17 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not all that close to the airport, really. This is LA 3139, right at the border of Jefferson & Orleans Parishes, near Harahan.

How are things? By the way, when is your birthday? I know it is in October but I have a raging case of graduate school amnesia. Hope you are staying above water.

Just keep asking yourself...What would a pirate do???

[identity profile] angledge.livejournal.com 2005-10-17 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
My birthday is this Thursday.

I will be celebrating it in San Francisco. Yabba whee!

Speaking of amnesia....

[identity profile] angledge.livejournal.com 2005-10-26 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
...did I give you that pirate wheel, by the way?!?!?

Re: Speaking of amnesia....

[identity profile] goldenstatekate.livejournal.com 2005-10-28 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes you did. I now live my life by the creedo: WWPD???

Re: Speaking of amnesia....

[identity profile] angledge.livejournal.com 2005-10-28 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Awesome. I can now stop wondering if I accidently sent it to Davy Jones' locker.

My housemates are bereft of piratical guidance, however. They are stuck with the "What Would A Unicorn Do?" wheel.

Re: Speaking of amnesia....

[identity profile] goldenstatekate.livejournal.com 2005-11-03 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
Oh no. Not unicorn...I've heard they can get awfully silly.

How is da dirty south treating you???
