The Day After.

OK. The election is over. Hopefully, you voted yesterday. Congratulations - that's entry-level participation in democratic society.

What are you going to do TODAY to ensure that we continue to build a better nation?

Feel free to post this question (or your own variation thereof) on your LJ. I am seriously interested in the answers you get.

I'm going to set expectations higher. I know it is vague, but I'm not good at commitment.

When President-Elect Obama kicked off his campaign for president, I had no faith in our country. Even last week, my belief was that Americans would NEVER vote a black man with a middle name of "Hussein" into the presidency.

But they have, which proves that what feels like deeply entrenched prejudices may be easier to overcome than it seems. It proves that at least half of America is ready to look beyond name and color.

Many Americans are still openly victims of prejudice based on religion (mostly Muslims and Atheists) and sexual orientation. Perhaps we should push our fellow Americans to look past those issues, just as they have race and gender.

[logistically, I realize that religion and sexuality are MUCH bigger issues than gender and race - mostly because most of America see them as choices, therefore a judgment of a person's character - but it is at least a starting point for thought]

What other prejudices exist today that should be "pushed"?

I don't know.... body image/sizeism? Regional stereotyping?

What can individuals do to fight these prejudices?

I am seriously interested in hearing about what you decide to do to stay involved.

No, I mean it.

Good question.

Already doing it--educating tomorrow's adults. Damn kids don't seem to be cooperating like they used to, though. And then there's that darn burnout cynicism that keeps getting in the way. ;-)

On the other hand, if I get through to just one kid a year, it's a win.

Teachers are heroes, plain & simple.

Thank you for the hard & sometimes unrewarding work that you do.
