The Day After.
Nov. 5th, 2008 08:01 amOK. The election is over. Hopefully, you voted yesterday. Congratulations - that's entry-level participation in democratic society.
What are you going to do TODAY to ensure that we continue to build a better nation?
Feel free to post this question (or your own variation thereof) on your LJ. I am seriously interested in the answers you get.

Date: 2008-11-05 06:08 pm (UTC)When President-Elect Obama kicked off his campaign for president, I had no faith in our country. Even last week, my belief was that Americans would NEVER vote a black man with a middle name of "Hussein" into the presidency.
But they have, which proves that what feels like deeply entrenched prejudices may be easier to overcome than it seems. It proves that at least half of America is ready to look beyond name and color.
Many Americans are still openly victims of prejudice based on religion (mostly Muslims and Atheists) and sexual orientation. Perhaps we should push our fellow Americans to look past those issues, just as they have race and gender.
[logistically, I realize that religion and sexuality are MUCH bigger issues than gender and race - mostly because most of America see them as choices, therefore a judgment of a person's character - but it is at least a starting point for thought]
What other prejudices exist today that should be "pushed"?

What can individuals do to fight these prejudices?
