The Go-Home Battle ended today
Jul. 7th, 2003 06:24 pmI'm leaving South Carolina this Thursday (July 10th). That will exactly one month after I got here. Mom, while not thrilled about this, has acquiesced. Basically, I told her I was homesick & that I felt she was doing well enough to manage without me. I presented my schedule as a fact, & she didn't argue. So all that strategizing was for naught.
I'm trying a different route home, so as to avoid I-85, the Most Boring Interstate Ever. This new route is also a bit shorter (640 miles, according to Mapquest). I can't WAIT to go!!
So, should I tell Stacy my leave date, or just show up on Thursday night?

My mother is a lunatic.
Jun. 25th, 2003 09:05 pmMom woke up this morning covered with hives (no punning now, you guys - you know who I'm talking to). Her back, arms, & face were all swollen & she was running a fever. Now, quick poll:
[Poll #150105]
Care to guess what my mom decided to do? Hint: her lips are so swollen tonight she can hardly talk. If anyone ever asks me where my stubborn streak comes from, I think I'll simply email them a link to this LJ entry.

Staples, rain, & visitors
Jun. 18th, 2003 10:23 pmNot much to report. Mom got her staples out today - I watch the physical therapist take them out & guess what? The tool he used looked just like a regular staple remover (the flat kind, not the Jaws of Life looking kind).
I didn't swim today; instead, I did a beginner's Pilates class. This was my first Pilates experience. I really enjoyed the workout, which was challenging but not spirit-breaking. I think this form of exercise will both strengthen my swimming & help me out with some occasional back problems. We're supposed to get a break in the weather this weekend. I think I'm going to go hiking & leave the little Lucy woman at home for a while. I've been getting a lot of exercise while I've been down here - if only I wasn't eating all the cakes & pies & cookies that well-wishers keep bringing for my mom, I'd probably be losing quite a bit of weight.
And STACY is coming to visit next weekend!! The brave grrl. This will be the first time I've brought a girlfriend home to meet the parents. Very exciting. She's taking Amtrak to Greenville, where I will have to pick her up at 5:30 AM. Yay. I don't care.

background
Jun. 3rd, 2003 12:50 pmI just realized I haven't made a LJ entry with my summer plans/future plans/etc. So here's a quick summary of what I've got planned over the next few months.
On June 9th I'm moving out of my apartment here in Jenkintown & heading down to my parents' brand-new retirement home in South Carolina. There, I will be taking care of my mom, who is having hip replacement surgery on June 9th. Once she's medically cleared to drive (estimate: 6-8 weeks), I'll be returning to the Philadelphia area for a few weeks (living with Stacy in Delaware). Then, in mid-September, I'm leaving for Scotland to do a one-year master's program in Geographical Information Sciences at the University of Edinburgh.

One of the strangest incongruities in my family is the fanatical devotion to the Philadelphia 76ers displayed by ( my mother. )
She calls them her "gang", & refers to Allen Iverson as "my little hoodlum". Anyway, when I called her last night, she was in a frenzy, watching the Sixers v. the Pistons in overtime playoff action. She was practically incoherent, screeching advice, groaning over AI's missed free throws at the end of regular play. Sad to say, the Pistons eventually won the game. She was so crushed. She just passed the phone to my father without any comment.
