Yes, I'm toying with the idea of doing a Whole30 again. Why? Because I need to get my eating back under control. And hey, the hardest part - no alcohol - really isn't an issue any more. I might consider doing a slightly relaxed Whole30, where I allow myself legumes. That way I can try to keep the meat content a little bit lower.

One thing that usually helps me get my food intake under control is journaling. So..... let's start with that.

AA: one cup of horrible coffee with bad creamer & sugar.

Breakfast: two slices of bacon, two eggs scrambled with Parmesan cheese, a Spinach Florentine bialy, mixed fresh fruit. One cup of tea, Earl Grey, hot.

Lunch: a Conflicted burger (one Black Angus beef patty & one veggie burger) topped with fried avocado, small fries with ketchup, & lots & lots of Coca-Cola.

Dinner: a bowl of cookies & cream ice cream. Yes, Houston, we have a problem.
angledge: (2016)
Goals from last year:

1) I will attend at least 100 SQUID practices this year.

Not even close. I did 26 swim practices this year. I need to find another workout venue, because Squid weekday practices are inconvenient enough to be a real disincentive, & I never make Saturday practices because we're always on the go on the weekends. Possible alternatives: swimming at Denver Recreation facilities, finding another team with better practice times, or maybe picking up a different activity. I have toyed with the idea of just throwing myself into skiing & hiking, & maybe doing yoga.

2) I will compete in at least one swimming competition this year, either a pool meet or an open-water event.

Nope. I let my uncertainty about my new job derail my training & missed all the summer events.

3) I will overpay my mortgage by at least $4,000 this year.

Nope. We overpaid by $1,916.05. Good but not great. Still, we have done well in our first year of homeownership. We owe $320,172.25 on the mortgage, & our realtor estimates our house could sell for around $370,000. Our neighborhood has been proposed for historic district designation, which would likely drive up values. We're doing well with Breezehome.

4) I will earn, in some fashion, some income from any source OTHER than my AECOM paycheck.

Yessss.

5) I will log at least 30 Whole30-compatible meals a month into MyPaleoPal.

No. I have actually done an about-face on this. Instead, I have been attending Overeaters Anonymous & trying to work through some of my weird issues around food.
-----------------
Health: Weird year. I worked on mental health for a while, then stopped. I worked on weight loss, then realized I'm all fucked up in the head about weight & food. I feel good but I need more exercise for sure. Still not sleeping well. It's not been a great year healthwise. But I did achieve some of the specific goals I had last year: I grew some food in my own garden, I learned how to brew kombucha (I have a batch going right now), & I'm eating more seafood & vegetables than ever before.

HEALTH GRADE: Change in direction required.

Wealth: We did pretty well this year! We didn't make any huge outlays, & didn't realize any huge windfalls. We just plugged along, paying down debts, saving money in assets. Very boring, very pedestrian.

Change in assets, 2016: increased by $55,011.64
Change in debts, 2016: decreased by 10,817.27
Change in rough net worth, 2016: increased by $65,828.91

WEALTH GRADE: Steady Freddy.

Happiness: This year has been volatile. HPG & I nearly broke up in late summer. I'd say we are doing much better now. My job transition was stressful, but overall I think it was a good move. Larger trends - political, mostly - have made me wonder if our world is worth saving. We've made some good friends in our neighborhood, & met even more great people this year. I've spent tons of time in the mountains, exploring the beautiful areas around Denver. But the year's finish - the surprise discovery of my elder brother Richard - means that 2016 can never be anything but amazing.

HAPPINESS GRADE: Despite everything, would 2016 again.

Plans for 2017

I dunno. I did so badly with my resolutions in 2016 so maybe this year I'll just see how things go. Or I may write another post later with some modest goals.

This weekend was sacrificed to the blasphemous idol Skyrim. All hail Boethiah!

Friday )

Saturday )

Sunday )

I have learned a very important lesson: super-processed, glutinous, sugar-laden foods are like a DRUG for me. Once I start eating them, there is ZERO satiation. I ate six donuts & would’ve eaten ten more. I am not exaggerating. I ate an ENTIRE large pizza, by myself. I continued eating it long after it stopped tasting good or after I felt full.

And how do I feel? (I’m writing this up on Monday morning.) I feel awful – poorly rested, nose is congested, tummy is gassy & acidic. I’ve had a muscle tic under my right eye for 48 hours straight now – though to be fair, that may be blamed on too much watching the Dragonborn running around on the TV screen. I didn’t make it to church yesterday – y’know, for EASTER (too sleepy, too grumpy). My self-esteem is in the basement with a shovel, digging a sump. These foods are not healthy for me.

Is anyone surprised that I’m planning to go back on the Whole30 immediately? I’m debating whether or not I’m going to continue food-logging here. From the comments, I realize that people are reading these posts, which argues for staying here. I was also considering logging using an app called MyPaleoPal, but I kinda like having all my stuff in one place, whether it’s food logs, swim practices, or rambling posts.

Anyway, to wrap up: this has been an extremely interesting six-week journey through Whole30-Land. I am completely convinced, based on my personal experiences, that the Paleo eating template – pasture-raised meats & eggs, wild-caught fish, organic vegetables & fruits, & small amounts of nuts & seeds – is the proper way for me to eat. I lost seven pounds in six weeks (183 to 176 pounds) – and actually, on April 25th I was at 174 pounds (which means this weekend probably added 2 to 3 pounds back onto my body). I like the way I feel when I eat clean. I will relax some of the Whole30 restrictions – I will drink the occasional alcoholic beverage, & when we go out to eat, I’ll probably have dairy &/or gluten. But at home, it’s going to be pretty much Whole30 all the time.

Sleep: luxuriant. I took an extra-long, hot shower before bed & did my full pre-bedtime routine. I slept for at least eight hours & I feel deeply refreshed.

Breakfast: S&SBC, the last of the strawberries, half an avocado, black Scottish breakfast tea.
Stopped by Safeway while out running errands, picked up an apple & some scallions to use in chicken salad.

Snack: kombucha.

Lunch: whipped up a batch of Nom Nom’s Madras Chicken Salad, using meat picked off the rotisserie chicken. Bones put in the freezer for a later batch of bone broth. Had chicken salad & a green salad (red butter lettuce, cucumbers, celery, bell peppers, Tessamae balsamic dressing) for lunch.

Pre-WO: tuna cake.

Went to SQUID practice.

Post-WO: the rest of the chicken salad.

Dinner: Philippine chicken adobo with smashed sweet potatoes & cauli-rice sauteed in bone broth.

I ate a lot today, but I did a lot today.
angledge: (polar bear paw)
Sleep: awful. I was wound up after the Game of Thrones & it took forever to calm down - especially because I decided not to do my pre-bedtime routine. These decisions are baffling to me. I also couldn't stay asleep - I was awake at 3:30 AM & for good at 5 AM.

Breakfast: S&SBC, half a grapefruit, Siggi's mixed berries & acai yogurt, & sugary, milky Scottish breakfast tea.

Lunch: leftover grilled salmon with avocado salsa, leftover asparagus, & an entire roasted Kabocha squash. I just couldn’t stop eating it, it was SO good.

1 PM: my nose is all stuffed up. Dairy may be a problem food group for me (but not a very serious one).

Dinner: curried pork & carrots over steamed spinach & cauli-rice. My neighbor Steve came over for dinner after smelling the curry from the slow cooker in the late afternoon. He ate his meal with his eyes half-closed, & said he was ready to propose marriage when he finished.
angledge: (polar bear paw)
Sleep: again not good. I'm stressed about my job & it's starting to eat at me at all hours.

Breakfast: S&SBC, grapefruit, Bloodless coffee.

Snack: tuna cake & coconut cream Larabar. I'm just gonna finish off the evil things & then not buy them again until I have a genuine need for them.

2:00 PM snack: All right, I'm eating emotionally, I'm wallowing in a deep Bad Mood, so today is the day to reintroduce dairy. A BIG OLE MUG of sugary, milky Scottish breakfast tea & A WHOLE FREAKIN' 2.5-OZ. BAR of Mast Brothers cow milk chocolate. You want to know something?? I would've thought that, after 42 days (SIX WEEKS) without a proper cuppa OR a nibble of chocolate, that the two of these things together would've transported me directly to Heaven. Not so. The tea is good. The chocolate was nice. But they weren't nearly as good as I thought they'd be. Even 60% cacao chocolate tastes weirdly sweet, & I didn't really like the sugar in the tea, either. Now, this may be because I'm in an unredeemable Bad Mood today, but it might be that my taste buds have adjusted to a no-sweetener palate.

I also ate the last two apple pie Larabars at some point in the afternoon. Now my house is Larabar-free. It should stay that way.

5:00 PM: I have a mild case of heartburn. I never have heartburn. I also had a brief sensation of light-headedness with a racing heart earlier this afternoon. But that might've been the sugar, or the 76 mg of caffeine from the chocolate plus the 40-50 mg of caffeine from the breakfast tea. I've not been consuming much caffeine, so that was probably a bit of a rev for the heart.

Went out to the GOT Premiere last night, so dinner was an Epic lamb bar.
angledge: (polar bear paw)
Sleep: not good. I went to [livejournal.com profile] weedweasel's apartment last night to watch the Season 5 finale of The Walking Dead (I was too chicken to watch it alone) & then we watched Talking Dead afterwards, so I didn't get home until around 10:30 PM. In bed by 11:15 PM, but then a whiny Shadeaux kept waking me up until I finally got her situated - in the bed, tucked against me like a little spoon - & she went to sleep. And started snoring. Out of bed at 7 AM.

Breakfast: S&SBC, strawberries, bone broth, black Scottish breakfast tea.

Lunch: the last of the pork & apple-cabbage stew, cranberry sauce, & salad (red butter lettuce, bell peppers, carrots, cucumber, Tessamae balsamic dressing).

Snack: apple pie Larabar. OKAY WHAT SHOULD I BE SNACKING ON INSTEAD OF THESE INFERNAL LARABARS??

Dinner: two tuna cakes & (uhhhhh....) two coconut cream Larabars. OK. I admit it. I can't have these stupid things in the house.
angledge: (polar bear paw)
Sleep: good. About 7.5 hours, so a little shorter than some other nights, but Skyrim needs love too.

Breakfast: "Bloodless" coffee (that's my Kvothe joke for the day), S&SBC, kim-chi, strawberries.

I went to Palm Sunday services, then went to Sprouts & Marczyk's for some groceries. I bought one yogurt & one milk chocolate bar for Wednesday (dairy reintroduction). That's the first reintro I'm really looking forward to! Legumes? Sure, I'll take 'em but I haven't been craving them. Corn tortilla chips & Crispix? I don't think I *CAN* eat them in a sane fashion. But dairy? I'd like a little dairy in my life.

Snack: cup of decaf coffee at church after services, Epic turkey bar.

Lunch: monkey salad & kombucha. I wasn't in the mood for a hot meal, nor for a green salad.

I baked a 9x13 dish of S&SBC, so I'm ready to go for breakfasts this week. I wonder if I could freeze half of it, then make the sweet potato quiche & freeze half of THAT, & then alternate between the two for extra variable breakfast variety. Hmmm, sounds like a lot of work.

Dinner: grilled salmon with avocado salsa, actually cooked on the grill, with asparagus. I ate it like I was imitating a tornado ripping through Kansas. Holy cow, so delicious. Apple pie Larabar for dessert.

Snack: coconut cream Larabar.
angledge: (polar bear paw)
Sleep: very good. I started my pre-bedtime routine at about 10 PM (managing to pull away from Skyrim, yay!), in bed around 10:30 PM, & asleep almost immediately. I woke up just before 7 AM when a certain Puppeh tried to sneak into the bed.

Breakfast: S&SBC, bulletproof-ish coffee (Pelletproof? Arrowproof? Boltproof? What's "almost bulletproof"?), some chicken breast, strawberries. I have successfully broken out of my breakfast rut.

Rule 1 of Whole30: you can eat anything for breakfast that you would eat for lunch or dinner.

I went to swim practice today! First times in ages.

Post-workout snack: tuna cake, banana.

Lunch: leftover chicken adobo topped with onions, sweet potatoes, steamed broccoli. I DEMOLISHED a huge plate of food - yay, working out!

Spent a good hour or so in the park with Shadeaux.

Dinner: the rest of gumbo z'herbes, the rest of the jicama salad, & more rotisserie chicken. Yum.

Snack: apple pie Larabar & herbal tea.
angledge: (polar bear paw)
Sleep: GORGEOUS. I kept my promise to myself & made sleep a top priority last night. No TV, lights all low in the house, started my pre-bedtime routine at about 9 PM. I was in bed by 9:40 PM & asleep by 10 PM. I slept all the way through to 7 AM & I feel one thousand times better. YAY.

Breakfast: bulletproof-ish coffee (less ghee & coconut oil, stronger brew), S&SBC, fresh strawberries, kim-chi.

Lunch: corn tortilla chips, quick guacamole (half an avocado plus a spoonful of El Fenix salsa), salad (red butter lettuce, carrots, tomato, celery, Bragg's dressing). #surprisenosuprise: tortilla chips are DEFINITELY a FWOB for me - I will eat a bag of them until they are gone, & then shake the chip dust from the bottom of the bag into my mouth, & then look for another bag.

Snack: kombucha.

Snack: Crispix cereal, made of corn & rice. I meant to eat a handful or two but WHOOAAH! Another massive FWOB! I ate three-quarters of a box, mindlessly munching along. I was so full I didn't eat dinner.

I think that the most unhealthy thing about grains may be that they displace healthier foods from my diet. I ate Crixpix today instead of the tuna cake, steamed greens, & squash I had planned to have for dinner. Even if I'm not sensitive to non-gluten grains, that was a bad tradeoff.
angledge: (polar bear paw)
Sleep: awful, again. We were out late (went to a Nuggets basketball game) & then [personal profile] hotpantsgalore had to pack for her trip to New Orleans (she left this morning). I'm definitely tired. I'm going to make a point of going to bed very early tonight.

Breakfast: slice of S&SBC, mug of bone broth, black Constant Comment tea.

Lunch: jicama salad, gumbo z'herbes with andouille bacon (pulled out of the freezer yesterday), kombucha.

I went & did all my shopping (PetSmart, Target, WholeFoods).

Snack: coconut cream Larabar. I might have to admit that, for me, Larabars are a FWOB (Food WithOut Brakes). I could seriously eat ten of them in a row.

I made Nom Nom Paleo's Spicy Tuna Cakes. This was my second attempt at this recipe & it went much better.

Dinner: spicy tuna cake, a drumstick & some breast meat off a rotisserie chicken, cranberry sauce, steamed broccoli & baby asparagus with mayo, & baked sweet potato mashed with ghee & pumpkin pie spice. I also ate a few strawberries from the batch I bought today, & they were so sweet they brought a tear to my eye.

It is now quarter to eight & I do believe I'm going to go get ready for bed.
angledge: (polar bear paw)
Sleep: a little low on quantity (I didn't start getting ready for bed until almost 11 PM) but high on quality (did the pre-bedtime routine & conked right out once I made it to bed). Slept until 7 AM.

Breakfast: big slice of S&SBC, monkey salad, black Scottish breakfast tea.

Work was slow this morning, so I cleaned the refrigerator (as in, pulled out all the contents & scrubbed the walls, shelves, & drawers) & got Philippine Chicken Adobo with Sweet Potatoes started in the slow cooker. I used ghee in the skillet to cook the chicken - should be more flavorful than "nonstick cooking spray". Tripling the cayenne pepper will give it some extra punch. I also replaced the soy sauce with coconut aminos & fish sauce, & the rice vinegar with coconut vinegar. So now this dish is Whole30-compliant & features coconut three ways.

Snack: cup of herbal tea.

Lunch: same basic meal as last night (pork chops, squash, apple-cabbage stew) but with an added bonus from the freezer - leftover cranberry sauce I made at Thanksgiving! It's Whole30-compliant because the only sweetener in it is date paste. This addition went perfectly with the pork & the cabbage, & really amped the meal up another notch. YUM.

Snack: kombucha. I really need to learn how to make my own; at about three bucks a bottle, my kombucha habit is expensive.

Dinner: Philippine chicken adobo, sweet potatoes, & steamed broccoli. Topped with onions & the sauce from the slow cooker, along with salt, pepper, & diced chives. Nomnomnom.

 photo IMG_30441.jpg
Colorful, tasty, Whole30-compliant. YAY.

My (clean) fridge is full of leftovers again: casserole, jicama salad, pork, cabbage, squash, cranberry sauce, chicken, sweet potatoes, & broccoli.

Snack: chamomile tea.
angledge: (polar bear paw)
Sleep: after doing my routine, I was in bed at 9:21 PM. I think I was asleep by 9:23 PM. Slept pretty well & got up at ~7 AM. I'm a little foggy - probably because it's overcast outside.

Breakfast: 2 slices of the new S&SBC, half an avocado, black Scottish breakfast tea. Mmmm!

Lunch: enormous mug of bone broth, orange, salad (baby romaine, cucumber, bell peppers, carrots, Bragg's pomegranate dressing), kombucha.

Dinner: I had tried the Wildtree pork chops a few days ago & they were boring. So tonight I made a couple of yummy sides to improve them - baked acorn squash with ghee, & Sauteed Cabbage with Onions & Apples. Not only was the cabbage dish delicious, but it was satisfying to my inner Dragonborn as well.

Herbed pork chops, baked acorn squash with ghee, and apple-cabbage stew
My version: protein, healthy carbs, satisfying fats, tons of nutrition.

apple cabbage stew, Skyrim style
Skyrim's Apple Cabbage Stew: Restore 15 Stamina, Restore 10 Health.

Snack: some blackberries.

This was a good day - TONS of veggies, not too much meat, but protein from alternate sources (eggs, bone broth). Two new recipes.
angledge: (polar bear paw)
Sleep: wellll, we were out LATE with Bobo Bro, watching Sammy Dee Morton tear up some blues at El Chapultepec. I think I was in bed around 1 AM. Shadeaux got me up at 7:30 AM. Not gonna lie, I'm sleepy. Totally worth it though, because Sammy Dee is the man.

Breakfast: didn't eat until late. I had the last of the beef bourguignon, a grapefruit, & a cup of black Constant Comment tea. A weird - but oddly tasty! - meal.

I made a new breakfast recipe: Sausage & Spinach Breakfast Casserole. There's only four eggs in the 9x13 baking dish, along with about 5 cups of greens, a whole head of cauliflower, & a pound of pork breakfast sausage. It also contains bone broth, coconut milk, & some seasonings. It's a bit of a production to prepare, but it provides a TON of cruciferous & leafy green vegetables first thing in the morning. A worthwhile trade in my book.

Lunch: slice of the S&SBC (yummy!), kombucha.

Dinner: Hamburger (no bun), lettuce, tomato, & mayo; roasted sweet potato wedges; spicy dill pickles; & jicama salad.
angledge: (polar bear paw)
DAY THIRTY!!!

Sleep: good! [personal profile] hotpantsgalore had to get up early this morning for an appointment at work, but I just rolled over & went back to sleep. 10:30 PM ~ 6:45 AM.

Breakfast: prosciutto muffin, slice of sweet potato quiche, half an avocado, blackberries, black Constant Comment tea. I feel like I could type this sentence blindfolded & asleep. I really need to shake up my breakfast routine with some new dishes.

Lunch: another boring Wildtree dish - slow cooker pork chops with herbs & garlic. I swear I will never understand how a spice company can make & sell such bland spice mixes. I also had a salad (spring mix, carrots, bell peppers, sliced almonds, Tessamae balsamic dressing) & kombucha.

Snack: mug of bone broth & a banana.

Dinner: garlic-stuffed olives, beef bourguignon, steamed asparagus & steamed broccoli. And oh yeah, PrimalKitchen mayo. Nomnomnomnomnom.

I did it!
angledge: (polar bear paw)
Sleep: followed my routine, slept like a top (Huh?). 10 PM - 6:30 AM.

Breakfast: Hmmm. I think the greasy BLATs from last night's dinner are weighing me down this morning. I am normally a big fan of breakfast, but this morning even a cup of tea is unappetizing. I finally had a mug of barnyard bone broth, some blackberries, & a cup of black Constant Comment tea.

Lunch: prosciutto muffin, slice of sweet potato quiche, half an avocado, & half a sweet potato, roasted with coconut oil & pumpkin pie spice.

Snack: kombucha.

Dinner: Chile Verde repeat, ceviche appetizer & carne asada platter for entree (guacamole, mashed potatoes, sauteed mushrooms).
angledge: (polar bear paw)
Sleep: pretty good. I forgot to drag Shadeaux's Cozy Cave into the bedroom before going to sleep, & once I realized, I was too stubborn/lazy to get up & move it. She was very sad to not be sleeping in the den/bedroom with the rest of her pack, & kept coming in to check on us. Around 5 AM, I relented & let her into the bed. She curled up against me, sighed deeply, & we all slept like spoons until about 7 AM.

Breakfast: prosciutto muffin, slice of sweet potato quiche, half an avocado, blackberries, half a grapefruit, black Constant Comment tea.

I pulled a batch of barnyard bone broth out of the slow cooker - it's pretty good. I used the garlic spice mix from Wildtree.

Lunch: monkey salad. Yeah, not a balanced meal.

Dinner: I found this recipe for Sweet Potato Waffle BLTs a while ago & thought it looked like sex on a plate. So I made it last night - & was greatly disappointed. Not only was it an immense pain in the ass to make, but the waffles were greasy, had no body (duh, no gluten), & didn't even really taste like sweet potato. The batter was so greasy & runny, I ended up making pancakes instead of waffles. So the expectations I had from the food blog photos were definitely not met:

Food porn.
Food blog fantasy....

 photo IMG_30331.jpg
....my kitchen reality.

While I was disappointed in how my sandwiches turned out, they weren't awful. They were an acceptable dinner in any case. But it took two runs of the dishwasher & an hour of cleaning to re-set the kitchen, so I don't imagine I'll be making Waffle BLATs again any time soon.
angledge: (polar bear paw)
Sleep: OK. I followed my pre-bedtime routine but forgot the magnesium. I woke up several times in the night for no apparent reason. Also, [personal profile] hotpantsgalore reports that I was snoring badly last night. Sorry. 10:30 PM - 7:00 AM.

Breakfast: prosciutto muffin, slice of sweet potato quiche, half an avocado, blackberries (on sale yesterday at Sprouts), black Constant Comment tea.

Lunch: salad (spring mix, cucumber, carrots, bell peppers, Bragg's pomegranate dressing) & Mama's spaghetti sauce over zoodles.

Dinner: beef bourguignon & sweet potatoes roasted with coconut oil & sea salt.
angledge: (polar bear paw)
Sleep: lovely. 11 PM-7:30 AM. Finally, finally, FINALLY feeling adjusted to DST. Maybe.

Breakfast: We tried a new restaurant today, the Sassafras American Eatery. It had a New Orleans theme to both the decor & the menu. I had their daily special: braised pork shoulder, two poached eggs, fried potatoes, & pico de gallo. I also had a cup of black coffee, which sadly was not chicory coffee. It was a delicious meal, reasonably priced, & the restaurant featured no waiting & vey gracious service. A great new find for breakfast.

I put another Wildtree meal in the slow cooker: Beef Bourguignon (made with bone broth, not red wine).

Lunch: went to Braun Taphaus & had the ahi tuna salad with avocado, mango, cucumber, & tons of greens, with a lime-cilantro dressing. So good.

[livejournal.com profile] hotpantsgalore & I stopped at Sprouts while out & about today.

Snack: Monkey Salad (raw cashews, coconut flakes, banana). HPG was eating sweet treats from Rheinlander Bakery & I felt left out.

 photo IMG_30271.jpg
No, it's not made from real monkeys. It's a salad a monkey would eat.

Dinner: a tiny serving of the beef bourguignon. Best Wildtree dish yet!
angledge: (polar bear paw)
Sleep: fine. Went to bed around 10:45 PM & slept until 8:00 AM because [personal profile] hotpantsgalore went skiing, meaning she was up early & took care of Shadeaux. Bliss!

Breakfast: prosciutto muffin, slice of sweet potato quiche, apple with almond butter, black Scottish breakfast tea.

Lunch: SERIOUS FOOD BOREDOM has set in. I ate Larabars for lunch because nothing in the fridge (four meal options!) sounded appealing. It's now dinner time & I'm hungry but still not interested in eating anything compliant.

Dinner: the last of the lemon-dill chicken & veggies, a huge salad (spring mix, cucumber, carrot, bell pepper, Tessamae balsamic dressing), broccoli with powdered ginger & coconut aminos.
