This weekend was sacrificed to the blasphemous idol Skyrim. All hail Boethiah!
FRIDAY:
Sleep: broken. After doing my pre-bedtime routine, I was in bed by 10:20 PM, but Shadeaux was restless (she had a tummyache) & so I woke up numerous times during the night. Also, I strained my right groin at swim practice last night, & it twinged every time I shifted position. I got up around 7:15 AM.
Breakfast: S&SBC, navel orange, black Scottish breakfast tea. I wasn’t very hungry this morning (unusual).
Snack: mug of bone broth. I hope that will provide the nutrients my body needs to fix the groin pull.
Lunch: Bloodless coffee (yeah, didn’t sleep well at all), leftover curried pork chops & carrots, cauli-rice, & steamed kale.
Snack: a chocolate Power Puck, which I bought at the cafe located inside the new library that opened near my house last month. Despite the awful name (who names a food product the Power Puck?? ), it was pretty tasty - & would be Whole30-compliant, if not for the agave nectar (no sweeteners allowed).
Dinner: Philippine chicken adobo, mashed sweet potatoes, cauli-rice.
Late-night Snack: two tuna cakes.
SATURDAY:
Sleep: very poor – I stayed up until 1:30 AM playing Skyrim.
Breakfast: Bloodless coffee, S&SBC, & two navel oranges.
Lunch: Lamb Epic bar & tuna cake.
I took Shadeaux for a two-hour hike at an enormous off-leash dog area (420 acres!).
Snack: I decided on a whim that today was Gluten Reintroduction Day & snacked on a sleeve of saltine crackers.
Dinner: It pains me to write this. I ate SIX Dunkin Donuts. It was gluttonous. The sweetness felt like a morphine drip in my arm. Really, it was kind of an overwhelming sensory experience – I was sniffing the donuts like I was the Sugar Plum Fairy’s idea of a narcotics dog, & eating them was an insane combo of mouth-feel (nothing is as fluffy as glutinous bread products) & incredible sweetness.
SUNDAY:
Sleep: huh, six donuts for dinner & you don’t sleep well. SCIENCE!
Breakfast: I went to Rupert’s & had “Almond Joy” French toast – brioche French toast stuff with dark chocolate, slivered almonds, & coconut flakes, topped with syrup, bacon, two scrambled eggs, & coffee with cream & sugar.
Lunch: two beers on the front porch with my neighbor.
Dinner: I ate an entire Pizza Hut Skinny With a Kick (HAHA) pizza. Now THAT’S what I call going off the rails.
I have learned a very important lesson: super-processed, glutinous, sugar-laden foods are like a DRUG for me. Once I start eating them, there is ZERO satiation. I ate six donuts & would’ve eaten ten more. I am not exaggerating. I ate an ENTIRE large pizza, by myself. I continued eating it long after it stopped tasting good or after I felt full.
And how do I feel? (I’m writing this up on Monday morning.) I feel awful – poorly rested, nose is congested, tummy is gassy & acidic. I’ve had a muscle tic under my right eye for 48 hours straight now – though to be fair, that may be blamed on too much watching the Dragonborn running around on the TV screen. I didn’t make it to church yesterday – y’know, for EASTER (too sleepy, too grumpy). My self-esteem is in the basement with a shovel, digging a sump. These foods are not healthy for me.
Is anyone surprised that I’m planning to go back on the Whole30 immediately? I’m debating whether or not I’m going to continue food-logging here. From the comments, I realize that people are reading these posts, which argues for staying here. I was also considering logging using an app called MyPaleoPal, but I kinda like having all my stuff in one place, whether it’s food logs, swim practices, or rambling posts.
Anyway, to wrap up: this has been an extremely interesting six-week journey through Whole30-Land. I am completely convinced, based on my personal experiences, that the Paleo eating template – pasture-raised meats & eggs, wild-caught fish, organic vegetables & fruits, & small amounts of nuts & seeds – is the proper way for me to eat. I lost seven pounds in six weeks (183 to 176 pounds) – and actually, on April 25th I was at 174 pounds (which means this weekend probably added 2 to 3 pounds back onto my body). I like the way I feel when I eat clean. I will relax some of the Whole30 restrictions – I will drink the occasional alcoholic beverage, & when we go out to eat, I’ll probably have dairy &/or gluten. But at home, it’s going to be pretty much Whole30 all the time.
