World War Z was set where now?

OK, who has read Max Brooks' book World War Z? I'm not usually a fan of zombie-related anything, but this book was a good read.

Now I read that Brad Pitt is starring in the movie version of the story. They are filming in Glasgow, even though according to BBC News "the film is set in Philadelphia".

This brings up a swarm of questions:

1) I didn't think the book was set anywhere in particular. It is a series of interviews describing events that took place all over the world.

2) Does Brad Pitt have a thing for the city of Philadelphia? He's already acted in Twelve Monkeys, which took place in Philly.

3) If the movie is set in Philadelphia, why aren't you filming it in Philadelphia? Admittedly, when I visited Glasgow, one of my first comments was that it reminded me of Philadelphia. But even so, Philadelphia itself would be a better stage for a story supposedly taking place in the City of Brotherly Love. Besides, your extras in Glasgow are going to have the wrong incomprehensible accent.

Oooh this kind of thing gives me fits. Jim Carrey insisted on setting Bruce Almighty in Buffalo, and at a specific B-lo TV station, which Carrey remembered fondly from being on Canadian cable when he was a kid. So they then proceeded to build a near-perfect set of WKBW-TV for the inside shots, and then shot everything else on back lots and cheap on-locations with row houses and other shit looking absolutely nothing like here at all.

Glasgow looked a lot like Philadelphia, but with wider streets. Maybe that detail appeals to film crews.

It's all aout politics - tax incentives, ability to shut roads down for outside shots, etc. they save a lot of money by shooting in different locations. This is why most WB and SciFi TV Shows are shot in Canada.

Yeah, I did a little bit of Googling & it sounds like the new Governor of Pennsylvania was thinking about cancelling some tax incentives for filming in Philadelphia. He ended up NOT cancelling them, but the uncertainty was enough to spook the producers. Bogus.

I thought I'd ask, but would you mind if I quoted you on Geeking Out About in a [livejournal.com profile] metaquotes kind of way?
