weekend away
Jun. 21st, 2004 05:42 pmThis weekend, I traveled north for a STASIS meeting in Aberdeen. Most of the Edinburgh contingent left on Friday, driving for about three hours before arriving at the University of Aberdeen. Saturday was spent in preparation for the meeting, then at the meeting, then relaxing at a friend's flat, drinking wine & chatting.
Sunday, we drove back down the Eastern coast, stopping first at Dunnottar Castle in Stonehaven.

The ruins are extensive & our party spent quite a long time scrambling around them. Before we even got into the castle, though, we spotted some marine wildlife in the sea surrounding the castle. We scrambled down to the beach for a closer look at what turned out to be a pair of curious seals!

Behind the seal is an oil tanker, a common sight near Aberdeen, which is a center of the North Sea oil & gas industry.

seolta and
funkyplaid were among my traveling companions & fellow seal-chasers.
After Aberdeen, we continued South, stopping briefly at St. Cyrus on our way to St. Andrews. We eschewed the golfing for more ruins, visiting St. Andrews Castle. We wanted to also visit the Cathedral, but it was closed by the time we arrived. However, the west facade of the cathedral towers over the town; even over the castle ruins themselves.

Upon arriving back in Edinburgh,
seolta & I had a couple of drinks at my local, the Southsider, & concocted plans for future Pub Quiz victories & a trip to the Orkney Islands in August. The summer is getting better by the day!
