I just took down the giant map of Philadelphia that has dominated the wall behind my computer for the last three years. I think that map formed a large part of my inspiration to go into GIS. I've stuck pins in that map marking all the places in Philadelphia that I know. Green pins were restaurants/bars, white pins were residences, blue pins were swimming-related, etc. It was a primitive GIS, you see? The pins didn't have a lot of information associated with them (except for the memories stored in my brain associated with each location), but they were data arranged in a cartographic setting.

The skyline of Philadelphia is going to be sooo different when I get home in October 2004. The two new sports stadiums (stadia?) will be complete. The residential tower at 8th & Market will be complete, something like 55 stories. The new building at 17 & Arch (right next door to ISSI's former location) will also be complete, something like 60 stories. And there's talk of a 40-45 building next to 30th Street Station.

Even my little town, Jenkintown, is going to look a lot different. West Avenue was closed starting yesterday for a redevelopment project designed to make Jenkintown more pedestrian-friendly. Three or four blocks near my apartment are being repaved, re-sidewalked, & planted with big shade trees. I think it's going to look phenomenal. And phenomenally different.
