I, for one, welcome our new Six Apart overlords!

Six Apart Ltd., the small software firm founded by childhood sweethearts Ben and Mena Trott, is set to make a big splash with the acquisition of Danga Interactive Inc.'s LiveJournal blogging network.

The deal, which will be announced on Thursday, involves an undisclosed amount of cash and stock, eWEEK.com has confirmed.

The acquisition gives the San Mateo, Calif.-based Six Apart a major boost in the blog publishing business and a legitimate shot at staying relevant in the face of stiff competition from Google Inc. and Microsoft Corp.

Hmmm... I hope they:

1. Still offer a free version (even though I have a paid account)

2. Don't essentially move all the live journal accounts to another one of the blog platforms. It seems unlikely to me that they'll keep all of them distinct though, as that would be a PITA to maintain.

And I'll certainly backup as XML just in case something goes wacky in the transition...

Is there some area that allows you to back up your entire journal in XML? Where would that be?

Yeah, there's an export function: http://www.livejournal.com/export.bml

I tried it a while ago and it didn't do quite what I wanted, but it's certainly better than losing everything.

Thanks for the link. I've made a backup, but it stinks. I hope LJ stays functional. After all, I have the LJDQ to think of!

If half of what the LJ homepage post says is true, I think we'll be okay (at least for a while).

When I tried making a backup a few months ago (I really wanted to make a print copy to put with all my paper diaries) I remember thinking that maybe if I knew how to use XML is would be useful, but formatting it nicely by hand would take forever.

How do you back up your LJ? I want to do this too, just in case.

I normally have exported using

http://www.livejournal.com/export.bml

however I did hear someone tell me there were tools for this. I will dig around and see.

I wonder if we will be hit with a standard subscription model (ie 4.95 a month or something)?

I hope not.

Time start the LJLF!

OK, that export tool is The Suck, but now I've got a garbled, nasty version of my LJ backed up ... just in case. Thanks for the link.

There's a big post about it on the front page.

It seems that they are not currently planning to change anything at the moment but the development process.

Looks good, better than I'd hoped. Though I admit a lot of stuff in that post looks a lot like what we were told when we were bought out by Big Brother...

We feel that there's a lot of synergy between our two companies and we both benefit from this relationship by bringing a lot of value-add to the table. By focusing on our core competencies we can continue to provide robust, turn-key, industry-leading solutions while also lowering Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) to our valued clients.

Bwahahahaha! I get internal emails like this all the time. Nice to know that LJ isn't dealing with people who talk like that.

You never know, I guess. I think [livejournal.com profile] ernunnos said it best in this post. We have something to worry about, but not just yet.

You don't need posting access to play the LJDQ - anyone can post answers in a comment on the Monday post that contains the questions. It's all explained on the community info page (http://www.livejournal.com/userinfo.bml?user=ljdq) - read #2 for details on answering the quiz. I look forward to reading your answers!
