Some weekends, I get to Sunday night & sigh, disappointed with myself for letting two whole days of freedom slip by unexploited.

Last night was not one of those nights.
YOU SHALL NOT PAS- well, OK, go on ahead.

Photos tell part of the tale!

Friday was the end of a hectic week at work, which peaked - literally - on Wednesday with a one-day, there-and-back drive out to Reno, Nevada. [personal profile] chaosvizier fradulently documented my travels here because I was too busy to post the photos myself. The real story was boring anyhow - I drove four hours to Reno, did a quick visual reconnaissance of two development properties, then drove four hours home. Anyway, by Friday I was more than ready to join Des & some other environmental consultants for drinks at Harrington's Pub on Front Street. We drank until about 10 PM, then I made my way home. I had to get to bed early because ....

... on Saturday, C* & I had planned a gorgeous hike along the coast north of Bolinas. We hit the trail about 11 AM, & had absolutely perfect weather for a 7.5 mile-trail hike to Alamere Falls. I think I'll just let the photos speak for themselves ...

Check out my awesome truck stop sunglasses, purchased en route to Reno.
C* took my photo next to the upper portion of the falls.

Oop!
To get to the beach & the lower portion of the falls, we had to scramble down this treacherous-looking cliff. It wasn't as bad as it looks - I was able to do it without even straining my shoulder.

Needs more cowbell. And history.
Bits of the Headlands bear striking resemblance to bits of the Highlands. Or perhaps, Middle-Earth.

See, there ARE waterfalls that go directly into the ocean!
Alamere Falls spray almost directly into the Pacific Ocean. The air was a mixture of freshwater & saltwater mists.

It's kind of like a thinner, warmer version of Ithaca Falls.
We waded in the stream, watched seals in the surf, & ate lunch on the beach before hiking back to Bolinas.

Saturday night was a quiet one at home, because I still had big plans left for the weekend. I dragged my ass out of bad at 6:15 AM on Sunday to join my co-workers for the Bay to Breakers, an annual San Francisco tradition. It's a 7.5-mile run from the Financial District (where I work) all the way to the ocean. I ran in costume, which is also part of the tradition. I'll post photos when I get my hands on them. But to give you an idea of the scale of the event, here's a photo from the San Francisco Chronicle:

This is how I wish I could spend all of my time. After this weekend ... well, I can't declare yet that I love San Francisco, but I might have a bit of a crush developing. In any case, when I fell asleep on the sofa on Sunday afternoon, I slept the sleep of the just. The just plain tired.

Yeah!

I think the paper said there were 65,000 participants? It was a hoot! There were naked runners! And centipedes! And salmon (runners, dressed as fish, who started at the finish line & ran upstream)! And drag queens and political protesters and robots and did I mention the naked people? and asylum escapees and at least one astronaut and Harlem Globetrotters complete with a basketball hoop and an entire Tiki bar and a chariot equipped with a hot dog grill and ... wow. It was a spectacle.

And everyone actually ran? or was it more of a speedy walk or even a saunter?

Oh no no no ... there were serious runners, yes. But most people - myself included - walk most of the distance. I ran little bits of the route, but speed was certainly not the goal. I think my finish time was 2 1/2 hours!

OK, that's much more reasonable given the costume descriptions :)
