Saturday night was a truly EPIC night – Halloween in the French Quarter! My co-worker E* had an inspired idea for a costume, & he transformed me from my normal status as a mild-mannered FEMA bureaucrat...

BACKGROUND: one of FEMA's many programs is called Operation Blue Roof. FEMA installs blue tarpaulins as temporary patches on damaged roofs. They are a very common sight down here.

Beignets and destruction.

My co-worker branniejan & I decided that we would use our day off to accomplish two things: 1) make a pilgrimage to Café du Monde, the quintessential New Orleans coffee shop; & 2) make a visit to areas east of NOLA, where the eye of Hurricane Katrina made landfall.

( We actually made a pretty early start... )

Le mini-chateau.

After a month of living in hotels, I was definitely sick of their bland décor, noisy guests, tardy elevators, & lack of laundry facilities.

( So yesterday I moved into a studio apartment in the French Quarter. )
