I was in the field today (Maplewood, NJ) & as I was driving back towards the Manhattan skyline, I felt happy to be heading home. This isn't a bizarre sentiment, but it's not often I feel like NYC is my home. I have always felt very strongly that my apartment in NYC is my home, but the city as a whole usually feels more like: my arena, my playground, my giant terrarium. It's been my habitat, not my shelter.
But lately I've even started feeling some NYC pride. Coming from Philadelphia, I have a lot of stored-up disdain/resentment/envy for NYC to overcome, but it seems to be happening. (Philadelphia often seems to feel like the surly, overlooked younger sibling of the gigantic metropolis to its North.) I like this place, despite the expense, the heat, the noise, & the dirt. I like it here, & can envision staying here for a good long while.
hotpantsgalore & I have often discussed relocation plans, but those discussions have trailed off a bit lately (except for the fact that we have both sworn that - if McCain wins the election - we are moving out of the United States to some country where we can enjoy full marriage rights). Most places are Right Out of the moving discussion because they would require buying at least one car. The last thing I want to do right now is start having to worry about gas prices. Other mass-transited cities (particularly San Francisco) remain somewhat enticing, but overall, inertia & general satisfaction with our current abode seems to be keeping us in place.
Good God, if this continues I'll end up becoming a Mets fan! There's no CHANCE I would ever abandon the Iggles, but my allegiance to other Philly sports teams is weaker. HPG really does love the Mets.... but the Little Lucy Woman (rabid Phillies supporter) threatened to disown me if I shift allegiance.
