Friday Night Lights.
Oct. 22nd, 2011 08:00 amSo last night I finally went to a Texas high school football game.
Several of my neighbors are teachers, & one of them, M*, invited me to his school's football game last night. M* teaches at Chavez High School. CHS was playing their cross-town rivals, Westside High School.
A little background regarding these two schools. They were founded in the same wave of school expansion about ten years ago. Originally, CHS was going to be named Eastside High School, but parents came up with some study that showed that schools named Eastside are usually underperforming. M* speculates that this is because many Texas cities (for some reason) have a Mexican/Hispanic neighborhood on their east side (true in both Houston & Austin), & that it is the poverty of east side neighborhoods that leads to poor school performance. In any case, EHS became Cesar E. Chavez High School. Their athletic teams are called the Lobos & their school colors are blue & grey. For laughs, Westside High School's teams are the Wolves & their school colors are cobalt & silver. Way to be creative, Houston Independent School District.
The game was horribly lopsided - we left in the 3rd quarter when the Lobos were down 40-3. But it was fun to go - because M* is the unofficial team photographer, we got to be on the sidelines. Football is LOUD from that close.
