Game over, man! Game over!
Feb. 2nd, 2006 06:42 pmWell, it's certainly been an interesting last day in NOLA. I was awakened quite early this morning to the gentle sound of cascading water - & the not-so-gentle sound of concussive thunder. The cascading water, most unfortunately, was inside my apartment. When I got up & got the lights turned on, I discovered that the horrific thunderstorm that hit the city last night had forced water into my building. That water was pouring out of my ceiling. I ran around with buckets & garbage cans, catching the biggest streams, then mopped up the rest with towels. The water in the street was up over the curb, which was quite disconcerting. I have never seen such an intense storm. While normally I enjoy thunderstorms, last night's meteorlogical temper tantrum was just not cool. Hasn't this city had enough for a while?
What's even less cool is that I haven't been able to get ahold of my landlord. For two weeks. Now, this fact was troubling me before last night, because I really wanted to meet up with him one last time to check out of the apartment, turn over the keys, etc. But, since he doesn't have a security deposit to return to me, I wasn't terribly concerned. I planned to mail him the last rent check (for three days of February) & then leave the apartment keys with the building association president. However, now that there is WATER STREAMING INTO THE APARTMENT, I'm leery of just walking away. So, I've emailed my landlord (for about the tenth time), this time telling him about the leak. I sent a letter describing the damage with the rent check. And tonight, I'm going to have the association president walk through the apartment with me when I give him the keys. I'm also going to take a bunch of photos with the disposable camera I just purchased.
Sigh. What fun. Additionally, a tornado spawned by this storm actually hit the New Orleans Airport, closing it for part of the day. Lucky for them, they have resumed service & all Continental flights scheduled for tomorrow are on time. Lucky. For. Them.

Despite all the storm-related drama, I got to work today, had a fairly productive day, & said Good-Bye to all my comrades. I was the least sad person, I think. More than one person commented on the size of my smile. This is not to say that I won't miss my FEMA friends. But compared to going home Home HOME? Well.
Louisiana tried to be nice today to make up for the storm. It was sunny, clear, & about 75 degrees. I think the fog is going to feel very cold tomorrow.
I can't wait.

The aforementioned camera is actually going to serve two purposes this evening. The first one has something to do with the fact that I'm typing this entry from the cafe at the gym, & the box of Saltine crackers in my bag.

You're going home now, but trust me, we get these storms time to time. It's not that unusual.

The Saltines promises to be good...
