[livejournal.com profile] marasca has some positive things to say on that, if you haven't read it yet.

All good points made by [profile] marasca, but I'm still worried. Deeply.

Because a lot of women WILL be enchanted by the idea of a female VP. Because picking a longshot highlights his claim to be a maverick. Because she is HOT & RIDES A MOTORCYCLE & belongs to the freakin' NRA. The funnymentalists LOVE her.

There is plenty to attack, though (http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/08/29/begala.palin/index.html?eref=rss_topstories).

"For a man who is 72 years old and has had four bouts with cancer to have chosen someone so completely unqualified to become president is shockingly irresponsible. Suddenly, McCain's age and health become central issues in the campaign, as does his judgment."

I totally agree. I'm just worried that other voters will see other attributes.

You forgot to add that she knew she was pregnant with a child that had Down's Syndrome, and was given the option to abort, and decided not to.

Oh, and she was a FUCKING BEAUTY QUEEN!

I think this could backfire. Anyone who was thinking of voting for mccain as a "wish it were hillary" vote (and I think that's damn few anyway), is probably gonna think twice cause palin, although a hottie, is a just the opposite of what someone would be looking for if they want a woman who's going to really push for progress on traditional women's issues (right to choose being at the top of that list). Plus, she may be smart and capable, but she doesn't quite exude gravitas or experience. Which will concern people since mccain is old as hell. It seems like a transparent hail mary. It could work, but I don't think its a lock by any means, because i really don't think it swings anyone who wasn't already in their camp. And I think it opens them up to huge amts of criticism from dems, like if Obama can be like, I'm ACTUALLY the candidate for women and I don't even have a vagina!

It's a long way from over.

Biden's state brings three too, so it's a wash anyways.

We were at the bar tonight talking over the week and she was on the TV and we were trying to figure out who it is she reminds us of. After rectifying the overabundance of blood in our beer streams, the name finally came to us. She looks like Tina Fey.

Yep, what you said. When I heard who he'd picked, I thought "Someone in that camp is pretty brilliantly strategic."

Dammit.

Many fundamentalists were not enthusiastic about McCain. *IF* they vote, then yes, they would most likely vote for him. But if they're not enthusiastic, turnout amongst that group would be low. You have to give most people a strong reason to go to the polls - why do you think Karl Rove worked so hard to get so many anti-gay-marriage referenda on state ballots in 2004? It brought out the fundamentalist vote - & while they were in the voting booth, they re-elected GWB.

Yeah, she's a nightmare. Doesn't believe global climate change is caused by human activity, vehemently opposed listing the polar bear as endangered, champions the teaching of "intelligent design" in public schools, etc. etc. etc.

A couple of years! Ricardo is an awesome guy.

I'm afraid I really don't know anyone from Shorey, though. I don't think I ever set foot in Shorey!

Yeah, I agree. This feels like a transparent hail mary. It's also clearly a page out of Karl Rove's book, as you said. I just think it's going to backfire...or at least hope it does. What I've been hearing on the radio is the McCain "If I can't have Hillary" Supporters are actually going over to Obama because of this. McCain just shut them out with the Palin choice. This move is highly offensive to women. You're right, it's completely to mobilize "their base". I haven't heard much from the men who were moving from Hillary to McCain.

I hope the excitement dies down after people start to realize how utterly deplorable she is on so many issues.
