I am on the bus heading home from work. I am on the bus because my eye has not yet healed enough for me to feel safe driving. I am at work late on a Friday because I was assigned yet another Phase I ESA (oh, how I tire of doing them!) & I procrastinated on it all week. Then around mid-afternoon today, I finally hit a writing groove. So I decided to ride that wave, & I stayed at work until I finished the draft. I think it's pretty good.

I wish I could figure out a way to enter that writing state at will. It is easy for me to detect: suddenly, I can stay on task, I remember details of the report that have to be consistent, I get quick at summarizing large amounts of data. I am not pestered by constant impulses to check email or IM. But I don't know what causes me to enter this state.

Any thoughts? Perhaps particularly from the NaNoWriMo folks?

while you may not be able to kung-fu grip your way into writing headspace, you can give yourself some suggestive triggers - a playlist, a beverage, a particular writing spot, a scented candle or other aroma, etc.
