Marking essays can be fun!
Nov. 30th, 2003 09:02 pmI'm marking essays for the introductory social geography course I've been tutoring this fall. The writing is SO BAD! It causes me both grief and amusement.
"These then become soluble and are leached into the soil causing toxication of water and death of life."
The death of life! By toxication! Alas.
"A dangerous level of CO2 emitted into the atmosphere is reacting with oxygen to produce CO3, which is destroying the ozone layer."
My inner scientist recoils in horror from the total lack of understanding contained in this sentence. This student has blended together two separate air pollution issues (the greenhouse effect & the ozone layer) & created a new chemical - CO3!
"The countries may also bee looking at problems of Eutrophication where the pesticides have run off into nearby streams killing fish and other organisations having a huge impact on biodiversity and the environment as a whole."
Again, the science here is completely wrong. But there's also some entertaining word replacements!
"Internationalisation on the part of firms takes place for many different reasons in this essay I will look at the reasons behind internationalization and how this development of economic activity can place."
I *think* this was the thesis of one essay. The atrocious sentence structure makes it hard to be sure.
"Gene Modification, gives products features not developed naturally, Opposition to cloning and manipulation on morale grounds e.g. Dolly the Sheep, especially if applied to humans."
Dolly the Sheep says, "This sentence is baaaad."
