My parents had to put Greta to sleep yesterday. Her leg was causing her pain & she wasn't able to get up on her own. Today is the first day in over 30 years that my parents' house has not had a pet living in it. They have signed up with a Giant Schnauzer rescue organization & hope to find a young female Schnauzer who's in need of a good home.

If you happen to be reading the classifieds in your local newspaper, I'd really appreciate it if you'd scan the Dogs for Sale section & let me know about any listings for Giant Schnauzers. Thanks.

Ang & Greta, June 2003
Greta, 1997-2004. Good dog.

I miss Greta, but mostly the loss is my mom's. I will pass everyone's condolences along to her.

Thank you, FFB. My mom (the Little Lucy Woman) will find a dog before too long. Dogs love her - they know a good provider when they see one!

It is a sad truth that big dogs don't live very long. Knowing it never seems to make it easier to accept their loss, though.

That's sad news, even if you expected it, and even if it's for the better. Greta was a good dog. I know you'll miss her. Stay well.

thank you

She was a good dog. Perhaps not a very obedient dog, but she had a heart made of pure Milk-Bones.

I'm doing fine - I knew the score when I was last in South Carolina, & I more or less said my goodbyes at that time. But according to Spider Dad, the Little Lucy Woman is not doing well at all. But that's not surprising. She loves her dogs a lot.

I think she is buoyed by the thought of getting a chance to rescue another Schnauzer though. I hope they find one quickly.

I am so sorry to hear that. Please tell your mum that all those who have heard Greta stories share her loss in some way.

thank you

I'm so sorry to har this, Ange. Perhaps the saving grace is now she won't eat you whole, as the glint in her eye intones within the picture above.

You sound okay, regardless of the loss. I hope this is true.

thank you

Greta wouldn't have ever tried to eat me, if only because she knew I was a reliable source of treats. That glint in her eye was her thinking to herself, "I bet I can get at least three treats out of this pushover human today!"

I'm so very sorry for you and your family. I know what's it like to have to make that decision. You know it's best for the puppy...but you hate loosing a family member. I'm part of the Scottish Terrier Rescue network here and sometimes people make mistakes with schnauzers. I'll let you know if something comes along.

thank you

I think you're more likely to find Miniature Schnauzers coming your way, but if you happen to find a Giant, that would be fantastic! Thanks so much!

Well, if you look at Opus through the wrong end of a telescope and squint really, really, hard... nah, no good.

Velcro's my cat. and he rocks...in a terrified-of-lint-and-everything-else way. Opus is my wife's cat. Kiliamo is my son's cat ("Kitty Cosmo" became Kiliamo in ds speak). And Foxy, well, Foxy came with the frame. But I love 'em all (most of the time.)

I like big dogs. My feelings on how big a dog should be run like this: they have to be big enough that it takes your whole strength to hug them. That's a properly-sized dog. Greta required full effort hugs, & she deserved to get 'em, too. She was a lovey.

Thanks especially for checking out the classifieds. That's how my mom found Greta in the first place - she was a rescue from a couple that had bought a Giant Schnauzer without really knowing what they were getting into. She was such a behavior problem when she first arrived at my parents' house - she wasn't even properly housebroken, even though she was over a year old. But with firm discipline & tons of love, she eventually became a really good member of the family.

sorry

Hi Angela, Sorry to hear about Greta. I know she meant a lot to your family from the stories I heard about her last year. Although another dog cannot replace Greta- I hope your parents find a dog to bring companionship, amusement and joy to their home. Send pics when they get one!

thank you

She certainly was an important part of my parents' lives. And you're right - she will never be replaced. But having a new Giant to love will be very good for the Little Lucy Woman.
