I'm going.

Des has told me that I am for-sure going to be deployed to a FEMA assignment some time next week. I do not have any details yet. I will post when I know.

Just one thing: it's highly unlikely that I will be anywhere near the chaos in New Orleans. I will most likely be somewhere near the oil refineries - Gulfport or somewhere. So when you read the news about the hellhole that has eruped in the Big Easy, don't worry, I'm not headed there.

Edit: Newsweek has an interesting article about the longer-term issues raised by this storm.

Hugs and Blessings... I'm so glad you're not going to NOLA. In the past, I would have local contact people available for you down there, but for obvious reasons they are not there anymore.

Hopefully by next week they will have the coast well on the way to some semblance of recovery.

Like I said, I'll send you an email with my contact information.

Have you done this kind of work before? You can see oil slicks, and/or toxic stuff floating on the surface of the water from the footage of NO. It's a mess down there.

No, I've never done this sort of work before. There's a first time for everything, right? Several of my co-workers have done FEMA assignments before, & I'm picking their brains for tips.

And with proper html...

Have you guys seen [livejournal.com profile] interdictor?

Totally cracktastic. Human beings are...creatures. of a kind. What kind, I'm not entirely sure, but oh yes, I am paying attention to this.

Congratulations.

Yeah, I've added [profile] interdictor to my f-list. He's got better information than any of the major news outlets.

Heh. If I was a smart panda I'd have looked at your f-list first. But I'm putting off going to work, so I'm not required to use brainpower for anything other than DEVIOUS PROCRASTINATION.

...Okay, now I'm just being lazy. Work time. Hurricane-free people need love too.

Good luck, hon! I know you'll do great, and I think it's really terriffic that you're going to help out with this (and massive overtime pay! yay!)

thanks!

It's not quite as exotic a destination as Japan, but hey we can't all teach English.

Nor can we all clean up oil refineries that were busted up by hurricaines.

At this point, I'd take a job driving a truck or packing boxes or anything if it meant I could help get supplies to New Orleans. The situation down there looks nightmarish. The slow FEMA response is a disgrace.

I totally agree. I'm glad you'll be down there doing something to help people.

I hope I get to help people. At the moment, FEMA isn't doing enough of that, IMO.

Working for FEMA, eh? I can't wait until there's a really big scare and you guys run the country.

...

What? It could happen. I'm not crazy just because I wear a tinfoil hat.

I remember that X-Files thread.

I'm almost afraid to be down there & associated with FEMA. Right now, FEMA is looking really bad. If they give me any T-shirts, maybe I'll send them home as souvenirs.

I think they're really trying. Nobody anticipated this many people would need assistance. There's really only so much that can be done from a logistical point of view. Now whether or not more should've been done to prevent the levee's from breaking is an entirely different matter, and should've been handled a long time ago by someone other than FEMA.

Good luck and be safe!

If FEMA pass you a dark suit, sunglasses, long coat, gun and a pass that gets you anywhere you know all the conspiracies are true!

Shhh! Don't give away all of our secrets.

We're being advised not to wear FEMA gear, btw. It's too scary down there to make easy targets.

So how do you tell the whole police force to seal off the city so they don't find the hurricane experimentation machine that made it all go wrong, if your not dressed correctly

wow, stay safe down there! I hope you can do some good too. Sitting around feeling helpless ain't much fun.

Congratulations, although that seems a strange word at a time like this.

Be safe and healthy, and remember not to overwork yourself. (Wow, I sound like my mother.)

Most of all, God bless you and your work.

I wish you the very best of luck, my friend. Luck, but also hugs. I hope it doesn't turn too stressful, love.

Is anyone else from work coming along as well?

Ang - that's totally awesome of you to volunteer.

I'll miss you :)

Be safe.

I'm not volunteering. I'm going on assignment for my company. Believe me, it won't be volunteer work. I will get well-paid for my efforts.

But I'll miss you too, sweetie!
