La chica & I are leaving the city for a couple of days. Since it's only late Thursday evening, we haven't decided where we're going yet - heck, we only thought up the plan to go anywhere yesterday! But the odds-on favorite for our destination is the North Coast - Arcata, Avenue of the Giants, somewhere north of here where the trees grow to the size of Saturn V rockets. I want to listen to rain dripping off of 500-year-old redwoods, smell the forest loam, & step off of the pavement for a few hours. Should be nice.

Work is busy as can be right now - even Des is looking careworn & haggard. But this new contract represents an enormous opportunity for me. I keep meaning to post about it, but I just need to find the time!

Last night I performed a sleep study - I slept with a blood oxygen meter/recorder & pulse counter. The idea is that if this machine detects that my blood oxygen levels drop during the night, I might have sleep apnea. If that is the case, I will probably end up going to a sleep clinic for a full overnight study. I was telling my co-workers about this yesterday, & it prompted an outpouring of Snoring Confessions: "I snore so badly that my girlfriend kicked me out of my own bed!" "When my husband told me I snored, I almost slapped him. I don't snore! I'm dainty!" "It's not just my wife who complains about my snoring. The dog won't even share a bedroom with me anymore." This actually made me feel better - while I'm still embarrassed about the whole snoring thing (& worried about the sleep apnea thing), at least I'm not alone. The whole world snores!

Oooh, have fun. I do love the area north of SF--a friend of ours has a place at Sea Ranch (a little south of the Mendicino/Sonoma border) and mmm, do I love it.

There's a lot of sleep apnea out there, it seems. I wonder if there always was, and now they're better at diagnosing it, or if there's something environmental going on...

One thing that helps with the snoring--a wedge pillow. Since I've gotten one, I wake up feeling like I've gotten a much deeper sleep, and I've been told it cuts down my snoring. ;) I highly recommend them.

Hope you and S* have a great trip, take lots of good pictures, eh?

I have a shaped pillow - it hasn't helped much. Alas!

This is driving me nuts.

...I didn't notice any snoring!!

Actually, that's one of the frustrating bits about all of this - I know that I haven't always been a snorer. It's a bit difficult to pin down when I started snoring, because - errrr - I was without a bed partner for quite a long time there. My housemates have been teasing me about my snoring for a while, so I think I started getting LOUD some time after I moved out here to SF.

Love to Des! His assistant(?) scared the shit out of me a couple of weeks ago.
"Before he left, Des told me to take care of the FEMA people."
"BEFORE HE LEFT??? DES LEFT? Where did he go?!!!"
"DC. Just traveling on this new big project. He's not GONE gone."
"You scared me."
sorry. had to share that.

Have fun on your adventure!

Enjoy the trip. I love going up there. One of the coolest places on the planet IMHO. Not that I've had a chance to explore much of the rest of it.

Wife told me I snore. I got BreathRight anti-snore strips. Snoring's 90% gone. That is all.

If only it were that easy.

I tried BreatheRight strips - they didn't help at all. Neither did changing my sleeping position, nasal irrigation, or any other quick-fix. ATM, I am trying an exercise program called Singing for Snorers (http://www.singingforsnorers.com). I've also started a sleep study (in-home portion done; sleep clinic portion upcoming).

This problem is really, really annoying.

Probably different people snore "at" different places in the cavities, and the strips likely do help those who resonate at certain places and not others.

Sort of like how closing a car window will stop water coming in if that's how it's coming in, but not if you have a leaky roof.

I wish I was going...I am engulfed in work, remember my job keeps your job going. I won't be out of the swamp of work till almost August, I wish I was with the Giants...I would like to be there this summer, I may just board a plane, call and be on your doorstep sometime in September. How does that sound?

Hug a tree for me, or at least try to hug 5 feet...
