Dear [livejournal.com profile] bad_latin,
Please email me in fifteen years when you're old like me. I am curious as to your definition of "totally rule!" ;-)
Sincerely, [livejournal.com profile] chaosvizier

In fifteen years they won't use email, they'll have direct real-time messaging via wireless cortex implants.

Dear [livejournal.com profile] chaosvizier,
I plan to become more alluring, luscious, and perfect with age, like a fine wine or George Clooney, thanks to veganism, yoga, weightlifting, vodka, wild sexual adventures, and the decision to lull myself to sleep each night with the somnolent drones of NPR announcers.
Will be in touch in .75 score years, as requested.
Sincerely, [livejournal.com profile] bad_latin

I'm on board with this vision of the future. I look forward to being about 90 years old & having that much experience with Life to draw on.

For all those who took the "not happen to me kthx" option, what is your alternate plan?
From: [identity profile] chaosvizier.livejournal.com
I don't think it's really "suicide" if you willingly consume lots of alcohol, sugars, and cholesterol because they genuinely taste good. So what if Hot Pockets have chopped off three decades of my life? They're SO DAMN GOOD!
From: [identity profile] angledge.livejournal.com
Despite your eating/drinking habits, you might still grow old. Lots of anecdotes about people who smoke 2 packs a day & drink a fifth of rum a night & yet live to be 90.

If you happen to be in that group, do you think being old will rule or suck? Why?
From: [identity profile] chaosvizier.livejournal.com
I'm thinking suck. Regardless of my drinking/eating habits and exercise/workout habits, as you get older, your body starts to degenerate. You can't quite move like you used to. Your brain isn't always as sharp as it once was. You are more sensitive to your environment. Certainly, these things occur somewhat haphazardly, in different ways to different people, but they are more or less inevitable. And really, I'd just like to stay where I am, physically.

Although I do look forward to getting that Senior Citizen's discount card in a few years. ;-)
From: [identity profile] angledge.livejournal.com
I'm definitely not looking forward to physical degeneration (& I'm doing what I can to stave that off for as long as possible).

But I do kinda look forward to some parts of being old. I'd sure like to be retired, for one thing. I'd also like to reach a point in my life where I can tell everyone what to do with the expectations they have for me.

Dude, I thought that was last month. ;-)

I'll grant, retirement does sound nice, sitting around, not working, free to go off and do what you want with minimal obligation. Although with six weeks paid vacation, I do get a decent amount of that sort of thing. And it is tasty.

This reminds me. Maybe I should make a will, mostly because I want to use the phrase "When I die, you can eat my brain, and it will give you Power."

Dibs on the medulla oblongata!
From: [identity profile] love2loveher.livejournal.com
I shall stick my fingers in my ears and sing "LAH LAH LAH LAH LAH!!!"

otherwise, should it happen against my will, I do have a 401k. but I was hoping to retire when I'm 45, therefore not too old. I just need to find a giant pot of gold to supplement the 12k I have in my retirement fund.

I'm already *there* honeychile. All I need is for the hair to fall out and to start needing viagra to get it up, and I'm an honorary senior citizen.

Ionno. Been bumming lately, maybe it's one of those 'midlife crisis' thingies folks been talking about.

Just seems like all my serious hopes and ambitions have already been accomplished, or I don't believe anymore they will ever happen. Sooo... what's left?

Just do what I did & THROW AWAY YOUR USELESS CRYSTAL BALL. Life always serves up more unexpected surprises, so to say that you've already done everything is sheer crazytalk.

If you've accomplished all your serious hopes & ambitions, it's time to make some new goals!

That's why I didn't go for the straightjacket option from earlier. Too stubborn to give up that way.

I don't feel a year shy of 40. I think I'm still in my 20's, or at least I feel/my attitude is that I am still in my (late) 20's. I don't feel responsible enough for 40. I don't think I physically look 40 (but certainly not late 20's), which probably contributes to it. I think of all the stuff I want to do, and think I have time to do them/time to save money for them because I'm in my (late) 20's and then I realize I'm almost 40 and I don't have all the time I thought I did.

To be succinct, it's later than I think it is, and one day soon it's going to be too late. :)

How old are we talking about getting? I think it's probably a mixed bag up to a point. You work, maybe hopefully have a good relationship or two, travel a bit, pay bills, etc. Then retirement, that part's good. But at a point when you start breaking hips, possibly getting senile and watching all your friends die... that part sounds pretty shitty to me.

I didn't have a particular age in mind. Personally, I'd like to live to be 100, because the year 2073 is going to be so interesting.

But I bet 2074 will be pretty cool too, so maybe I should aim for 101. Then again, 2075....

Well, I will be 44 in October, and my hubs will be 58 at the end of the month. There are always good things and bad things, but with the exception of my collagen, I don't think I regret losing anything. If I make it to 75, say, with all my teeth, as my Mom did, or to 90 still ambulatory like my Grandparents, that will be something to be proud of ;-)

I love those posters of the elders that say "OLD AGE IS NOT FOR WIMPS" because it's such a cop out to want your whole life to be like your youth. The whole experience is important. I think we've forgotten what it used to be like as an elder, respected, revered, honored. Now we want dessert first, we want everything yesterday, we want eternal "youth and beauty", to the point that we aren't even attracted to each other if we have a saggy rump, grey hair or wrinkles.

Sad, my dear, sad. I plan to be so sexy when I'm old that when I die the funeral director will have to take saltpetre to embalm me.

I now present to the court:

Should I plan to have the organist play a muzak version of "Don't You Wish Your Girlfriend Was Hot Like Me" during the wake? (LOL)

When we think about being old broads, don't we all secretly want to be Blanche from The Golden Girls?

I love you for asking this question.

Life is what you make it. You can loathe something that is inevitable, or you can try to find the good aspects of the process.
