1. What things, if any, do you really wish you could do but find you can't do because of where you're living now?

Get out of debt. The cost of living in NYC is ridiculous.


2. I'm visiting New Orleans in May, what advice do you have for me?

Bring lots of money to spend at great restaurants. The low low cost of drinks should help you find the cash for great food. Sadly, I don't remember any names of restaurants - maybe rhiannonjk will shout out with some suggestions.


3. If you had a 6 month break from reality where you could do anything you wanted and take along anyone you wanted and everyone would come back to the lives as they were before the break, what would you do and who would you take with you?

Hoo.... wow, there are so many great scenarios here. "Anything you wanted" is so broad!

Time travel! I'd grab funkyplaid & hermiston & we'd spend six months whizzing through history, visiting everyone from the velociraptors on forward, spending plenty of time in 18th century Scotland & boozing it up in every century of human culture.

Outer space! vulgarbarbarian, chaosvizier, & I would go live on the international space station, work on the AQUA & Aura projects to study the earth's atmosphere, & help install the components of the space station as they arrived. We would drink vodka with the cosmonauts & try not to throw up in outer space.

Save the world! effrontery, marasca, & I would find some fantastic volunteer opportunity where we'd have a real chance to make a difference in the life of the planet as well as the lives of real people. We'd drink mojitos at the end of every day & toast ourselves & our good work.

Hedonism! hotpantsgalore & I would run off to some fantastic resort (lesbians only of course) where I would spend all day SCUBA diving & she would direct fantastic plays, & all night would be spent... well, y'know, being real hedonistic. Also: free booze.

Fantasy! seolta & I would visit all of the worlds of all of the books we've ever read or wanted to read, getting to see the countries & meet the characters, as well as eating the food & of course, drinking the beverages.


4. How are you?

At the moment, I'm actually in quite a lot of pain. I had to visit the chiropractor this afternoon - my right shoulder is engaging in some nasty guerrilla warfare against the rest of my body & has caused great unrest in the neighboring provinces of Back, Neck, & Right Arm. More Advil plzthx.


5. What are the biggest differences between live in SF and life in NY?

Well, the weather is an obvious one - it's fucking freezing here right now. My living situation is quite different as well - living with a girlfriend is WAY different from living with my two crazy guys. I miss Torgi & the fireplace, not to mention the gardens & OMG the dishwasher. But I think there is more opportunity here - obviously for hotpantsgalore but also for me. I like having my Hive friends close at hand. NYC is also just a MUCH bigger city than SF - SF feels like a cozy little village in comparison. I mean - I've never lived anywhere like NYC.

I'm feeling better today & I have a better range of motion. Definitely progress. I'm scheduled for a follow-up appointment with the chiropractor for Wednesday.

New Orleans Food

New Orleans food:
Fancy Shmancy: Irene's. Hands Down. In the quarter, at the coner of Chartres and St. Phillip. They take a limited number of reservations, and there's usually a 2-hourish wait on regular days, but they cram everybody into a little piano bar to wait, and you can mee the most fantastic people in there (LOTS of locals). That's also where Big Ugly Lips (and her lover, Brad Pitt) cut in front of me to get in a year ago.

Local Good, decently priced, won't find in a guidebook place: EAT. That's the name of the place: EAT. On the corner of Dumaine and Dauphine. Here's the key, though: They can't serve alchohol, but you can bring your own. There's a great little store, Matassa's, a block down Dauphine (away from downtown) for picking up wine, or stop of GoodFriends (one block toward downtown) and get a low-priced cocktail (or, if you can handle milk-based beverages, try a separator there - ice cream with brandy and kahlua and I-dont-know-what-else because I wouldn't mix dairy and booze or I would explode)

Those are my hole-in-the-wall sit down places. Generally, the big places that are advertised are all great, except...
AVOID:
- PORT OF CALL This place seems to be recced all the time. The burgers are decent, but they use IMITATION BACON BITS instead of the real thing. Instead, if you want a good burger, or just a good loaded baked potato to help with that buzz that's getting out of control, go to Yo Mama's on St. Peter Street between Royal and Bourbon (across from the Pat O'Brian's side entrance). Yo Mama's also has the best tequila selection in the city, if that interests anybody.
- "Corner on the Square" corner of St. Peter and Decatur. They suck in life, and generall suck tourists dry. Instead, go to Cafe Maspero, a block or two toward downtown on Decatur. They also do silly things like charge for drink refills, but the food is better, the drinks are cheaper, and they don't seem to prey on innocents.
- Ralph and Kakoos. The atmosphere is GREAT, but they do things like charge for the hurricane glass, but not tell you, so you don't take it with you, but you paid for it. And the food isn't as good as you would get at a lot of other places.

If you are drunk on Bourbon and want food:
- Yo Mama's (see above)
- Rio Bar on Conti near Dauphine. SCARY CROWD, I would not go as a woman alone. But the food? PERFECT when trying to dull a buzz. All home made, and EVERYTHING is cooked with spirits... (the gumbo starts with a fifth of whiskey, the red beans starts with red stripe, even the chiken and dumplings starts with some sort of liquor)But it is a scary place. Just good food.

Bars:
The gay bars all have cheaper drinks than the straight bars. Especially during the day. Even if you aren't gay, go in one (St. Ann street is where you find the gay bars) and get a double, and take it with you wherever you really want to go. Well drinks at the Pub are usually $2.50 (but rumor has it that they've stopped stocking big cups, so it may be hard to get a double there).

$1 tequila shots (Jose Cuervo) are available through the window at Fritzels (don't go inside, or they become $6) between St. Ann and Orleans (ie, between The Pub and The Funky Pirate) Tip the lady well, she's a good person!

I've just started reading this (poorly-written) book called The Cousins' Wars, which traces the connections between the English Civil War, the American Revolution, & the American Civil War. I'm not far into it, but I think you might find it interesting - if you can wade through the prose!
