Based on the hilarious responses I got to my impromptu Quiz yesterday, I ask the audience ...

... would anyone be interested in participating in a cheap imitation Daily Quiz? I mean, just until the QuizMaster gets back to work?

Hi all ~

I'm in the computer lab today working on an extremely dull paper (the Modifiable Areal Unit Problem and its implications for spatial analysis ... yawn). If anyone's out there (all you East Coasters should be arriving at your desks soon), here are some pointless questions for you to ponder, & then send me your answers:

What did you have for breakfast today? Is this what you have every
day?

The year is at mid-February, getting ready for spring. What are your plans for this spring?

Can anyone provide a good definition of the phrase "social capital"? Have you read the book "Bowling Alone"?

Please complete the following sentence: "Throwing back one final dram of Glenlivet, Alasdair stood up from the bar, straightened his kilt, and _____."

Thanks for playing!

I miss the Quizmaster!

Looked up Bowling Alone on Amazon. Sounds interesting. Other books that look interesting to me at this particular moment include:
The Devil in the White City : Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair That Changed America
Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers
Hubbert's Peak : The Impending World Oil Shortage
And the book I'm reading now, Blind Lake, by Robert Charles Wilson

Bowling Alone is a tough read - very dense with statistics, etc. But I found it quite worthwhile. I was a bit disappointed that the author didn't have more suggestions for reversing the trends he documented. Then again, that's not his job - he's the social science researcher, not the social engineer.
