Let us make your cactus famous.
Aug. 15th, 2007 09:55 amAs some of you have heard,
hotpantsgalore is directing a play & needs a large saguaro cactus as a prop. Actually, the cactus is a main character in the play (appropriately titled Saguaro). This play will be part of the Estrogenius 2007 festival at the Manhattan Theatre Source.
In my role as Supportive Significant Other, I posted on a couple of local communities (
newyorkers here, and the astorians.com message board here), asking if anyone had a cactus we could borrow.
The responses have been hilarious. The astorians.com board has devolved into a horrible pun war, while the
newyorkers comments feature everything from helpful tips on making a fake cactus to a sanctimonious lecture on proper treatment of endangered saguaros to a fake "news" article about a saguaro in Tuscon that tripped while rushing to catch a plane to NYC for a casting call.
newyorkers has also provided us with our best lead so far:
coffeetwit offered to give us a cactus that's currently part of her employer's corporate decor. Last Monday,
hotpantsgalore & I trekked over to hold an "audition".
He's perfect: tall, spiny, handsome - everything a director could hope for in a leading cactus:

As my new co-worker C* said, "You've somehow added value to the lives of... dozens through your search for the perfect cactus!"
WEIRD.

Date: 2007-08-15 03:11 pm (UTC)Srsly. Enormous cactus. And it being NYC, no one blinks an eye.
It'd certainly be one way to get enough personal space on the subway.
You have creepy mind powers.

Date: 2007-08-16 04:51 am (UTC)Exactly. If no one is fazed by a cactus having the title role in a theatrical production, why would anyone think twice about it riding the N!? :-)
I can just imagine the logistics when this play hits the road and travels the country. First stop: Saguaro National Park.
I guess the plants really are smarter than the people! :-)

Date: 2007-08-15 03:52 pm (UTC)Everyone who comments on the thread should come to the play, though. Just to see how it all pans out. Otherwise all their wisecrackery would have been pointless. All their needling would have been in vain.
Tune in next month for Orson Welles' classic narration of "Saguaro The Worlds", directed by

Date: 2007-08-26 10:28 am (UTC)If I was in nyc I tried to do it for you by free!
We are organizing a 'cactus feast' for the end of sept. (www.festadelcactus.it).
For our art-section will have as 'testimonial', a famous plastic cactus of the seventies, made by a italian designer: the Gufram cactus:

Sure you can find one to borrow it better then a giant saguaro!
