angledge: (OMFG)

As some of you have heard, [personal profile] hotpantsgalore is directing a play & needs a large saguaro cactus as a prop. Actually, the cactus is a main character in the play (appropriately titled Saguaro). This play will be part of the Estrogenius 2007 festival at the Manhattan Theatre Source.

In my role as Supportive Significant Other, I posted on a couple of local communities ([community profile] newyorkers here, and the astorians.com message board here), asking if anyone had a cactus we could borrow.

The responses have been hilarious. The astorians.com board has devolved into a horrible pun war, while the [community profile] newyorkers comments feature everything from helpful tips on making a fake cactus to a sanctimonious lecture on proper treatment of endangered saguaros to a fake "news" article about a saguaro in Tuscon that tripped while rushing to catch a plane to NYC for a casting call. [community profile] newyorkers has also provided us with our best lead so far: [profile] coffeetwit offered to give us a cactus that's currently part of her employer's corporate decor. Last Monday, [personal profile] hotpantsgalore & I trekked over to hold an "audition".

He's perfect: tall, spiny, handsome - everything a director could hope for in a leading cactus:

Fine, he's not actually a SAGUARO cactus but who's going to know?

As my new co-worker C* said, "You've somehow added value to the lives of... dozens through your search for the perfect cactus!"

WEIRD.

how funny!

you must document the transporation process - i imagine it might be rather difficult to carry a giant cactus around nyc! ;

Yeah, actually we're trying to figure that one out. We could hire a man with a van but that would probably cost >$50 - boo. I'm hoping (for once) that I get sent into the field sometime in the next couple of weeks - then we'll just use the field vehicle.

Logistics in NYC - I tell you, it makes EVERYTHING more complicated.

I have a sudden mental image of you standing and waiting at the Union Sq. station for the N...with an enormous cactus.

Srsly. Enormous cactus. And it being NYC, no one blinks an eye.

It'd certainly be one way to get enough personal space on the subway.

You have creepy mind powers.

The cactus currently is located quite near Union Square! And we would use the N/W to take it home.... were it at all possible to wrangle that cactus on the subway, which it is not.

HOW DID YOU KNOW

Well...I know you live in Astoria, hence the N, and Union Square is where I am most often when I'm in NYC. (Which I'll be on Labor Day Weekend, btw.)

So...powers of deduction and random luck?

I'm sticking with my theory of creepy mind powers.

But ooooh! Visiting NYC! You & me & [personal profile] hotpantsgalore & [profile] omster should get together & eat delicious Indian food & do something fun.

Yes, yes we should. Is your cell number still the same?

Exactly. If no one is fazed by a cactus having the title role in a theatrical production, why would anyone think twice about it riding the N!? :-)

I can just imagine the logistics when this play hits the road and travels the country. First stop: Saguaro National Park.

I guess the plants really are smarter than the people! :-)
