It is time for my favorite annual internet event: Fat Bear Week! Click the link & rejoice in the glorious fatness of the bears of Katmai National Park.

I have noted with mild irritation that - effective October 1st - all my various savings instruments reduced their interest rates by 0.5%, right in lockstep with the Fed. They never delay with reductions but always dawdle on raising their rates to match Fed changes. Grumble grumble.

I had a work client give me a really nice gift today. It's the nicest thing any client has ever done for me. Don't believe the news - the world still has nice things in it!

One of those nice things is The Bible Project, a nonprofit, crowdfunded group out of Portland that provides tons of tools for learning more about the Bible. They are currently doing a once-weekly, yearlong podcast series on The Sermon on the Mount. They dive deep into every word, every phrase, & every nuance, & I've learned a lot.

I haven't posted in a while, but I'm excited for this: Jim Butcher is doing an Ask Me Anything (AMA) on Reddit this Saturday 8/22 at 10:30 AM MDT.

Now, to dig through my notes & see what questions I've been stockpiling in my head....

First: [personal profile] fizrep this is indirectly your fault. You & your stupid Japanese creek water pitcher.
Second: this is the text of a message I just sent via dwr.com's "Contact Us" web form.

---------------------------------------------

I just want to "congratulate" you on being the most persistent, virus-like marketing horror show I've ever been stalked by. I bought ONE water pitcher from you - five years ago - in another state - FOUR address changes back. And yet, your catalogs still find me. I guarantee you have spent any profit you ever made on that stupid pitcher to send me catalogs. I HATE your furniture. I HATE the sight of your logo at this point. I am NEVER going to buy another product from you as long as I live. This is solemn promise sworn by the Old Gods and the New.

I have opted out of your mailing list at least four times now. And yet, you always seems to find me. For fuck's sake you have sent me catalogs at WORK.

Stop. For the love of Mother Earth, stop sending your catalogs. I beg you, stop sending me catalogs!

Yours sincerely,

I'll admit, I'm a slow learner. Despite having been online since the early days of Usenet, I still haven't learned that arguing with people on the internet is absolutely pointless.

As usual, xkcd nails it.

I do try to limit the scope of my stupidity, however, by only engaging here & there. This week, I've been "in conversation" with a internet-only friend on Facebook. She is outraged by the "thugs" & "punks" protesting in Baltimore, & truly incensed by Lil Wayne's disrespect for the American flag. I have been trying to point out that the people in Baltimore have a lot of legitimate grievances that haven't been addressed when they tried more normal forms of protest, & that while I don't like seeing someone trash the American flag, they have every right to do it.

My friend's very conservative, right-wing rebuttals have usually included references to the facts that members of her family have been police officers &/or served in the US armed forces. She feels that this gives her a special understanding of these situations, or perhaps she feels it gives her feelings more priority. I feel that, in reality, it's almost the opposite. Having family that were police doesn't make you an expert on civil rights - in fact, you probably have an emotional bias in favor of the police that you should consider when you are responding to these stories. Having family that served in the military doesn't give you particular insight into the First Amendment - in fact, you might have an emotional bias regarding our national symbols that you should consider when you are responding to these images.

I too have family that served in the US armed forces. My grandfather fought in WWII as a Seabee, my uncle went to Vietnam, my cousin was a Marine. But their experiences are THEIRS - they don't lend me any righteous patina or extra patriotism. And even if it did, it doesn't make me an expert on Baltimore, race relations, civil rights, or the freedom of speech.

Maybe it's time to stop arguing with people on the Internet for a while.

This one won't be of interest to many of my LJ-friends, but you still ought to check it out. Paul Burka is the senior executive editor of Texas Monthly magazine (which, incidently, is a fantastic magazine). His BurkaBlog covers Texas politics from a deeply experienced, liberal perspective.

The best part, though, is that sometimes other informed people comment intelligently on his posts! For instance, he recently posted about the possibility that Texas will soon issue a license plate with the Confederate flag on it. Issuing license plates (somehow) falls under the purview of the General Land Office in Texas, & one of the commenters on the post was the GLO Commissioner himself! Other posters had informed comments regarding Civil War history. Of course, you get a selection of idiotic commenters from the left & the right, but.... there is some intelligent discussion.

More of this please, internets!
