Neil! Neil! Neil!
Sep. 5th, 2003 10:51 amOK, if you don't know who Neil Gaiman is ...
1) Bitchslap yourself while saying, "I am an ignoramus who has overlooked one of the most creative authors working during my lifetime."
2) Check out his blog,
officialgaiman
3) Run, don't walk, to your local comic book store & buy Sandman collections 1 through 10.
4) Your next assignment will be given to you upon receipt of your book report on Sandman. If you are now a goody two-shoe N.G. overachiever, you can work ahead of the syllabus by reading American Gods.
However, if you do know who Neil Gaiman is ...
1) Comment on this post to tell me what is your favorite N.G. work.

Date: 2003-09-05 08:52 am (UTC)Favorite NG work? Tough call... all Sandmans rule, but especially World's End and the one with the Key to Hell. I like the Sandmans better than his novels. Not to say that his novels are bad; certainly not. I just like comics. They have something extra. Good writing is one thing; good writing combined with good art is another.

As for favorite work, definitely the aforementioned Neverwhere. Yes, Sandman was faboo and all that, but it was more of a mythology than a story. American Gods seemed like a reworking of Sandman (especially with his prediliction for reinterpreting Norse mythology). Still haven't read Coraline yet.

Date: 2003-09-05 08:56 pm (UTC)I'm partial to Neverwhere too. Though I agree Sandman is in a league of its own.
For anybody who missed him that time 'round (is he actually holding your HAND, A?) he's doing a talk in NY on September 20. It's $20 a head, but it might be worth it...more info at www.nyisbookcountry.com.

Date: 2003-09-07 11:53 am (UTC)As for fave work... I'll say Good Omens as Sandman would be too obvious. Neverwhere was good and Londony as well.

Date: 2003-09-07 08:44 pm (UTC)I like just about everything Neil's written. For favorite Sandman collection, I'll say Brief Lives of Doll's House. I'm going to break from the pack on overall favorite, though, and go with Mr. Punch. The CD version of Coraline is cool because it's like having Neil sitting next to you, telling a story.
When I was in SF a few years ago I went to the comic book art museum and they had an exhibit of Charles Vess's paintings from Stardust- beautiful!
